Frequently Asked Questions?

How do I join?

Don't panic, there is no audition or scary interview . To find out about joining Bathgate Concert Orchestra please contact the Secretary at the number below, let her know your name and the instrument and experience you have and when you can first attend a rehearsal. She will arrange for a folder with the current music for your part. Depending on your experience this could be replacement Conductor through to 3rd Triangle.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have your own instrument, bring it with you and a music stand (if you have one). The orchestra have a number of instruments that may be borrowed in special circumstances, just explain to the Secretary.

How much does it cost?

Membership is renewed annually and the figure is set at the AGM, it has been £15 per year since I can remember. If you are not sure that you will like it, there is no pressure to pay immediately, but you will need to give your contact details if you borrow any sheet music.

Do I need to be a virtuoso?

Yes!

No seriously, enthusiasm and a vow of regular practise are normally all that are necessary. The Orchestra is not for absolute beginners, but many people do not follow the various grading schemes, nor do they fit precisely into categories. If you are reasonably comfortable to play in public, albeit hiding at the back of a section in an amateur group; then you should be able to make a start.

When is it on?

Friday evenings 7:15 pm for 7:30 or else!
School term-time.

Start dates are usually on the Members Page if there is a holiday.

Where are the rehearsals?

St. John's Church Hall off Mid Street in Bathgate opposite the swimming pool and registration office.

Click here to get a map that you can print and take with you in the car, or tape to the cross-bar of your bicycle (double-basses only).  For the outdoor type the OS Grid Reference is NS 9755 6883 GB. The latitude is +55.902 degrees and the longitude is 3.639 West (or is that -3.639 East) wouldn't want you landing in the North Sea.

Is there car parking?

Car Parking is very limited at the back of the church, but there is a car park outside at the left on the corner. And parking in the road opposite.

What about disabled access?

The Hall is all on one level. There are usually helpers available from the very start. Please explain any special needs to the Secretary and she will advise or make the arrangements required.

Is the Orchestra friendly?

Yes, the rehearsal comes first, then more practice, then eventually music. There is little time for idle pursuits, but you will be made very welcome and some of us may even talk to you (eventually).
