BATHGATE
CONCERT ORCHESTRA
ANNUAL
CONCERT REPORT 2008
Presentation
and Performance
After a bright start with the Joyeuse Marche there followed an
exciting rendering of the Die Freischutz overture with some nice
playing from the horn section. The new piece – Up the Wooden
Hill Suite – by orchestra violinist Archibald Smith, which
came next was most descriptive, from the giants slow heavy steps
to the sustained notes on the strings depicting dreamland. The
first half concluded with some nice ensemble playing in the
Wistful Waltzing selection, which, as a member of the early
2000’s grandparent generation I could well appreciate! However
I thought the playing was good enough to conclude that the
effect of a few beers and mixed drinks must have worn off!
The Vivaldi concerto for guitar and orchestra which started the
second half was a delight with splendid support for the Albanach
Duo from the orchestra throughout and then a barnstorming
performance of the Magnificent Seven theme and a slinky
rendition of the Pink Panther. Great stuff! Then another treat
from the guitar Duo with two Spanish and one Cuban pieces and
the concert closing with a fine performance of the American in
Paris Suite.
Well
done also to conductor Marzella, operating throughout in some
discomfort from an injured ankle. And how good to see the
youngsters being encouraged in the orchestra. Just what MMS is
all about.
